Type Locality and Naming

Named by the 104 Party of the Division of Exploration, Ministry of Petroleum, in 1959. The naming section is located in the area from Zhangzhuang through Niezhuang to the Nanyao Reservoir, Jiyuan County, Henan. This group may be divided into four formations - ascending (?, Nanyao Fm; Zeyu Fm; Yuzhuang Fm), which have a conformable contacts with each other.


Lithology and Thickness

The lower part, mainly brownish red and brick-red sandy conglomerate; the base, conglomerate, with occasional muddy sandstone and thin-bedded sandy mudstone; the top, sandstone, occasionally containing pebbles. The total thickness is about 480 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

This Group unconformably overlies the Jurassic.

Upper contact

Regional extent

The Jiyuan Group is mainly exposed at Huling, Zushimiao, Xichengliu, Zhangzhuang, Zeyu, Shuangshishu, Xiangzhuang and Maozhuang of Jiyuan County.

Fossils

The fossil mammals found in this formation are Yuomys cavioides, Lushiamyondon obesus, Sianodon chiyuanensis and S. sinensis.
